Michael Bloomberg WON'T Challenge President Trump

The Democratic field for president won’t have one prominent member on the list.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will not run for president in 2020. The veteran businessman wrote an op-ed for Bloomberg News and said he is launching a renewed initiative to reduce the nation's carbon footprint and curb climate change. He says the next two years hold a lot of work for his plan.

The former mayor is also setting his sights on gun violence by targeting better education for low income students.

Bloomberg called President Trump a threat to the U.S. and argued that the president must be defeated next year. He said Democrats must find and nominate the absolute best candidate to run against Trump.

But my question is: will they?

I know that many Iowa Democrats go to events with presidential candidates with two things in mind: seeking an ideological match AND electability. But my read on how it is currently trending is that Democrats will nominate a far-left candidate in 2020.

That DOESN'T seem to a winning strategy. Democrats were successfully in 2018 by making inroads in the normally Republican suburbs. Recognizing this, a number of Democratic candidates are what I call, "canary in a coal mine" candidates - Michael Bennet, John Hickenlooper, and John Delaney among them. They warn that Democrats need to run to the middle and urge working with the GOP to get things done to win in 2020.

As of now, the candidates drawing a lot of interest are NOT centrists and touting BIG government programs. That's why the GOP are eagerly eyeing the independents and the suburbs again for 2020.
