DNC Decision To Block Fox News Is A Mistake

By now, my listeners have come to understand how my program operates. I state my opinions - which are usually center-right with libertarian flourishes. I also welcome guests from the left and engage them in a respectful conversation - ensuring that they get to make their case for what they believe.

So you are probably not surprised that I think that the decision by the Democratic National Committee to exclude the Fox News Channel from airing any Democratic presidential debates, this year or next year is a big mistake. I also believe that Democrats will come to realize that - but too late.

DNC Chairman Tom Perez cited a story in the “New Yorker” about extremely close ties between Fox and the Trump administration. The article suggested that Fox has become a propaganda vehicle for the White House. Perez told the “Washington Post” that he doubts Fox can host a fair and neutral debate among Democrats candidates.

Although this decision will bring cheers from the Democratic base, ultimately the decision will be viewed negatively by most voters in two different ways:

1) Republicans and Trump supporters will believe that this confirm their suspicions that the mainstream media are favorable (and activists for) liberals.

2) Moderates and independents will view this decision as a means of shielding candidates from tough questions - and politicians who can't handle tough questions are viewed negatively.

This continues to the Democratic strategy of appealing exclusively to its hard-core progressives with no move to reach out to persuadable voters. This overall approach will spell disaster in competitive districts in 2020 - a fact that Democrats will realize too late.
