State will move trial in Mollie Tibbetts murder from Powesheik County

POWESHEIK COUNTY, Iowa - The trial of the man accused of killing a University of Iowa student last summer will likely move out of Powesheik County.

Cristhian Rivera has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Mollie Tibbets, who disappeared while jogging in Brooklyn, Iowa last July.

The state agrees the trial should be moved due to excessive publicity and also because of Rivera's immigration status. According to court documents, Rivera declares himself a "Mexican National" and his legal team believes this puts him under greater scrutiny.

WHO Channel 13 reports Rivera's trial is set to begin in September and a relocation hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
