Legal sports betting in Iowa just one Governor's signature away

DES MOINES, Iowa - The future of sports betting in Iowa is now in the hands of Governor Kim Reynolds.

The Iowa State House has passed a bill that was already approved in the State Senate, that will expand gambling in Iowa to include college and pro sports betting, as well as fantasy sports betting.

Republican State Representative Bobby Kaufmann of Cedar County says people are betting on sports in Iowa, anyway.

"Tens of millions of Americans are betting on sports, and fantasy, and they do not currently have the legal right to do so." Kaufmann said. "I believe this is a problem that needs addressed. I believe that sticking our heads in the sand and doing nothing is not an option."

Not all Iowa lawmakers support legalizing sports betting.

"Just because someone is already doing it does not mean the State should help them get deeper into a problem." Said Winnebago County Representative, Republican Tedd Gassmann. He voted against the bill.

With Governor Kim Reynolds' signature, Iowa's 19 casinos will be allowed to offer college and pro sports betting, and fantasy sports betting.
