Dense fog causes 6-car crash outside of Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa - Dense fog in Central Iowa this morning causes a chain-reaction crash near Perry, northwest of the Des Moines Metro.

It started when a car hit a semi on an off ramp at the intersection of Highway 141 and Highway 169 at around 6 a.m.

"And that just started a chain reaction of events, which was followed by two other vehicles and two other semis that were involved in the crash," said Sgt. Nate Ludwig with the Iowa State Patrol.

There was a total of six vehicles in the crash and one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Ludwig tells WHO Radio News winter is not the only time drivers can encounter poor visibility.

"In summertime we've got fog, so don't travel any faster than you can see in front of you. So that's the message for today."
