KANSAS CITY, Missouri - A couple of UFOs reported over Kansas City Thursday sparked an explosion of speculation.

Two orbs were seen high above the city and guesses ranged from weather balloons to aliens.

The National Weather Service said they had no explanation.

In the end, it seems the orbs are claimed as balloons launched from Maryland by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA.

A DARPA spokesperson said that given the position, it's likely the balloons are from the Adaptable Lighter Than Air program, an effort to create a vehicle that can change altitude over extended ranges.

One of the balloons was photographed over Vandalia, Ohio in the Dayton area by Taylor Cupp, suggesting the Kansas City UFO reports are likely the same balloons spotted there.
