Police: Woman arrested after leaving scene of fatal accident

DES MOINES, Iowa - A woman is arrested in the crash that killed a young Des Moines man on the Fourth of July.

Twenty-three-year-old Alexandria Mae Newton of Des Moines is accused of speeding and running a red light when her SUV crashed into the driver’s side door of the car, killing 19-year-old Kevin Troung and then leaving the scene of an accident.

Investigators say Newton was later at the scene of the accident when police arrived, appearing on body cam footage. Newton did not tell police she was involved in the accident at the time.

Police say Newton eventually admitted to having been the driver of the of SUV and that she had been drinking alcohol beforehand.

WHO Channel 13 reports Newton turned herself in Thursday afternoon and she is now charged with homicide by vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
