Two men charged with murder at Des Moines homeless camp

DES MOINES, Iowa- Two Des Moines men are charged in connection with the murder of a man, whose body was found at a Des Moines homeless camp.

Forty-six-year-old Yancy Freland and 26-year-old Bryan Norris are charged with First-degree Murder. They are both in custody.

Police say Freland and Norris killed Marshal Johnson back in July and tried to burn, then bury his remains. Johnson's remains were discovered by police on October 8th.

Norris has been in the Polk County Jail since September 13th, 2019. He had been charged with 2 counts of Assault On A Police Officer With A Weapon and one count of Interference With A Weapon following an incident where he was armed and shot by a Des Moines Police Department patrol officer.

Detectives say they determined Norris shot Marshal Johnson in the head, and Freland shot Johnson in the torso. Norris is also accused of cutting Johnson's neck with a sharp object. Freland and Johnson are accused of wrapping Johnson’s body in plastic and partially burying Johnson’s remains.

Police say Norris and Freland then, over multiple days, attempted to burn Johnson’s remains, and completely buried the remains, which were discovered by detectives October 8th.
