I've often said that politics is the art of persuasion. You can't just rail against something, you've got to offer a better alternative. We're paying the price for not constantly touting capitalism: a new survey says a majority of millennials will vote socialist.
A new survey by the non-profit Victims of Communism asked, through YouGov, questions about communism, socialism, and capitalism. Here are the findings among people ages 23 to 38.
- 36-percent say they approve of communism
- 70-percent will likely vote socialist (that’s doubled from last year)
- 22-percent believe society would be better off if private property was abolished
- 45-percent think higher education should be free
- The biggest threat (across all age groups) to the world is: 27-percent President Trump, 22-percent North Korea’s Kim Jong-Unand 15-percent Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
On a recent show, I told you about a new campaign introduced by Republicans called, "victims of socialism." I think one of the big problems is that millennials have no perspective on the impact of socialism. And when they realize they've gone down the wrong path, it will be too late. So we need to talk about the ACTUAL impact of socialism - but also PERSUADE voters as to why the free market structure under which we thrived is the way to lift people out of poverty.
Marion Smith, executive director of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, is also troubled by the findings of the poll. “The historical amnesia about the dangers of communism and socialism is on full display in this year’s report. When we don’t educate our youngest generations about the historical truth of 100 million victims murdered at the hands of communist regimes over the past century, we shouldn’t be surprised at their willingness to embrace Marxist ideas.”
