Des Moines boxer could be on the road to the Olympics

Des Moines area boxer Antonio Mireles

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Des Moines boxer standing six-foot, eight-inches tall is advancing to the next step in the selection process to represent Team U-S-A in the 2020 Olympics.

Antonio Mireles won the super heavyweight boxing division at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Sunday.

"I don't have crazy power, I'm not the fastest, but I get in there and I get moving. Most big guys don't have very good movement," said Mireles.

The former Des Moines Lincoln High School student will now head to a month-long training camp in Colorado, Springs, Colorado.

According to WHO Channel 13, U.S.A. Boxing will select boxers to compete at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Buenos Aires, Argentina from March 26th through April 3rd.

Mireles won the National Golden Gloves championship in early May of this year.
