DES MOINES, Iowa - Hundreds of people have a good excuse for being late to work this morning in downtown Des Moines. Fire broke out in a third floor office in the 8-story Capital Square office building at 400 Locust.

"I saw flames coming out, the glass started burning." Cameron tells WHO Radio News from a building across the street. He says he was evacuated from his employer in Capital Square and didn't see the flames until he was out of the building.

"I did see some smoke inside." He says.

Dozens of displaced workers watched fire crews from the skyways running between Capital Square and neighboring buildings.

Bill says he and a co-worker were walking on the sidewalk below when the co-worker pointed up at the fire.

"We were on our way to work and up where the glass is broken we could see flames going across the ceiling of the third floor." He says.

The fire call came in just after 7:30 Thursday morning, but workers were still standing around a couple hours later.

"Our company, there's typically about 130 people up on the 7th floor." Bill says. "I know there's probably an equal number of people above us on the eighth floor, and then the Register has floors five and six, and then McGladry, so there's certainly a lot of people not getting to work on time today."

There are no reports of injuries.
