Volunteers Pack 35,000 Meals On Martin Luther King Day

OMAHA, Nebraska - About 100 people spent Martin Luther King Day helping out others at the Food Bank for the Heartland in Omaha..

President and CEO Brian Barks tells WOWT 6 News, "We opened our volunteer center on this Martin Luther King Day this year to help entice volunteers to come in and help us out with projects we need done."

Those volunteers packed 35,000 lunches today for their Backpack Program. Those backpacks are for elementary age students across Nebraska and western Iowa who rely on that program to have food to eat at home. Every week, backpacks are restocked with food and distributed to children at risk for hunger.

Barks says the Food Bank is typically closed on Martin Luther King Day but because of the good turnout of volunteers they plan to open again on the holiday next year.
