Delaney exits Democratic presidential race days before Iowa caucuses

DES MOINES, Iowa - Another Democratic presidential candidate is dropping out of the race, just days before the Iowa caucuses.

John Delaney is an attorney, businessman, and former Maryland Congressman. His campaign announced his withdrawal this morning.

Delaney was a fixture in Iowa for the last full year, visiting all of the states 99 counties. His campaign never gained traction as polls continually showed him in the low single digits.

His campaign said he was exiting the race to make sure other candidates had a chance to advance in the state's caucuses. "John does not want the good work of his campaign to make it harder for those like-minded candidates on the bubble of viability in many Iowa precincts to advance in the Iowa caucuses and garner delegates," said a statement from the campaign.

Delaney also released a personal statement, where he said the top priority for Democrats was to beat President Trump in November. "Step one is to beat Donald Trump and restore decency to the Office of the President. In many ways, this is all that matters and I am fully committed to supporting our nominee and fulfilling that mission," said Delaney
