LGBTQ Groups Speak Out Against Bills in State Legislature

DES MOINES, Iowa - LGBTQ groups such as One Iowa are sharply criticizing legislation they say would curtail their rights in Iowa.

Three bills introduced this past week would, among other things, block physicians from providing medically necessary healthcare to transgender youth.

A spokesman for One Iowa calls the legislation a step backward for Iowa.

The three bills introduced last week include House File 2274, which would create a study committee to evaluate the inclusion of transgender Iowans in the Iowa Civil Rights Act.

House File 2272 would ban physicians and mental health professionals from providing medically necessary care to transgender youth.

And House File 2201 would create barriers for teaching topics related to gender identity in classrooms.
