Woman Accused of Hitting Kids with SUV to get Competency Assessment

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Des Moines woman accused of intentionally hitting and injuring two children with her SUV has bee ordered to undergo a competency assessment.

42-year-old Nicole Poole Franklin is accused of intentionally hitting a black male and a Hispanic female, and of yelling racial slurs at a gas station worker.

She faces two counts of attempted murder and a hate crime charge for the actions that all occurred within 90 minutes on December 9th.

The Des Moines Register reports a judge ordered the competency assessment Tuesday morning.

The 12-year-old black male received minor injuries after being struck. The 14-year-old Hispanic female was hospitalized for several days from her injuries.
