Police Look for Driver Who Crashed Into Building, Causing Gas Leak

DES MOINES, Iowa - Police are looking for the driver who fled the scene after crashing a pickup truck into a building, which led to a gas leak late Monday night.

The Des Moines Fire Department shut down the 2100 block of East 14th Street as MidAmerican Energy was brought in to assist with the leak.

Police say the driver lost control and took out a gas meter when the truck crashed through the outer wall of the building just before 10 pm. Officers could hear natural gas pouring out, but fire personnel said the leak did not present a public threat.

Several blocks of East 14th Street were closed as crews worked to fix the leak. The street reopened later, but crews from MidAmerican Energy were still on the scene overnight Tuesday morning.
