DES MOINES, Iowa - The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Fire Warning for the southwest portion on Iowa, which covers 14 counties southwest of Des Miones including the cities of Council Bluffs, Creston, Atlantic and Lamoni.
The warning is in effect from 12 noon until 6 pm Saturday, when dry and breezy conditions will produce extreme fire danger. The weather service advises that any uncontrolled fire will rapidly spread. Burning is highly discouraged. There's high confidence among weather service meteorologists that maximum winds gusts will combine with low humidity to create the fire danger.
Although the Red Flag Warning is isolated to the 14 southwest counties, all areas south of U.S. Highway 30 have an elevated fire danger. Wind gusts in excess of 30 miles per hour will combine with humidity levels in the lower 20's percent range to produce the fire danger.
