Hy-Vee to lay off more than 300 people as Urbandale center closes

URBANDALE, Iowa -- More than 300 people are losing their jobs as Hy-Vee closes a facility in Urbandale.

Iowa Workforce Development says the 368 people losing their jobs worked at the Hy-Vee fulfillment center in the Des Moines suburb.

The center will close May 6th.

Instead of using the fulfillment center, Hy-Vee says it will fill online orders through it's already existing stores.

Hy-Vee recently announced a number of changes, including an end to stores being open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The company is also buying a four now-closed QuikTrip convenience stores in Clive, Johnston, Urbandale and Windsor Heights. Hy-Vee will reopen those stores later this month under it's "Fast and Fresh Express" brand.
