Iowa Flood Center prepares for high water this spring

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Iowa Flood Center in Iowa City is preparing for more high water this spring.

"The risk is still highly elevated on the Mississippi River, less so on the Missouri. We do have some concerns based on the National Weather Service forecast on Big Sioux River and the tributaries in the northwest part of the state" says Iowa Flood Center Associate Director Nathan Young.

He says while flooding is still expected on the Missouri River, it should be mitigated a bit by upstream reservoirs.

Young also says there's still a lot of uncertainty on how bad flooding might be.

"How things line up with warming trends, precipitation, how quickly all the water that's being stored as snow or in frozen soil melts and makes it's way down toward us in Iowa" he says.

Young says the Iowa Flood Center has added 30 more stream gauge monitors to the 250 already in place across the state to give more immediate information on where flooding is happening.
