Medical Marijuana Bill Advances from Iowa House to Senate

DES MOINES, Iowa - A bill passed by the Iowa House limits the amount of THC in medical marijuana sold in the state. THC is he ingredient in pot that makes people high.

The House bill caps the amount of THC a medical cannabis user can purchase in a 90-day period at 4.5 grams. Republican Governor Kim Reynolds vetoed a bill approved by the legislature last year that set a 25 gram limit per 90 days.The current medical cannabis law allows cannabis products to contain up to 3% THC.

The bill passed by the House on Tuesday expands the list of eligible conditions that qualify for medical marijuana to include post-traumatic stress disorder and severe autism. It also expands professionals who can recommend medical cannabis for patients to include nurse practitioners, physician assistants and podiatrists.

Governor Reynolds has indicated she'll sign the House bill, which is now headed to the state Senate.
