MidAmerican Energy Suspends Disconnections, Late Fees over COVID-19

DES MOINES, Iowa - MidAmerican Energy has relaxed its penalties for late and non-payment issues in response to the COVID-19/coronavirus outbreak. It has temporarily suspended all disconnections for non-payment. It's also waiving deposits and fees for late payments and providing payment plans.

The utility is advising customers to be aware of scammers who threaten to disconnect service and demand payment over the phone.

MidAmerican says it will first contact customers by mail over payment issues and never demands instant payment by phone or only through one option such as a prepaid money card or money order. The company say it doesn't demand or accept payment from retail store gift cards.

The utility says it's also using cautionary procedures on location. It's asking customers if anyone at the location is under self-isolation for the COVID-19 virus or experiencing flu-like symptoms. If so, it says it will evaluate whether it's safe or postpone the work. If the work must be completed immediately, crews will wear additional personal protective equipment.
