Iowa State Patrol Says Traffic is Down 50% with Pandemic

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa State Patrol says traffic is down by 50% as a result of the COVID-19/coronavirus outbreak.

The agency says its spotting more speeders and drunk drivers with the decrease in traffic. Truck traffic remains consistent on major Iowa highways and interstates as goods and supplies continue to be delivered.

Governor Kim Reynolds has consistently declined to issue a stay at home order, saying Iowans are already doing a good job of social distancing.

Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie has asked all residents to stay at home and only venture out for essential needs such as groceries and healthcare.

Members of the state patrol say the steep drop in road traffic is an example of Iowans following recommendations from state and local leaders.
