DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa has seen a record number of workers file jobless claims for the second week in a row.

New numbers released Thursday morning from the Labor Department show 58,453 people filed in the week ending last Saturday.

That's the most single-week claims in state history.

The second highest number of claims in Iowa came the previous week, when 41,890 people filed jobless claims. The two week total for the state is 100,343.

For comparison, roughly 64,000 people in Iowa filed for unemployment during the great recession in a one-and-a-half year span from mid-2008 to the end of 2010.

Nationally, The Labor Department says 6.6 million Americans filed for unemployment claims last week as the coronavirus pandemic continues to take a toll on the economy.

The figure doubles the previous record of 3.3 million Americans from a week earlier.
