Union Accuses State, Governor Reynolds of Exposing Veterans to COVID-19

DES MOINES, Iowa - The union representing workers at the Iowa Veterans Home says the state and Governor Reynolds are putting veterans at risk of contracting COVID-19.

American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) of Iowa president Danny Homan said an employee at the Veterans Home in Marshalltown tested positive for the virus last week.

He said employees who were in close contact with that worker were told Tuesday that they had to continue working because they are essential employees.

Homan said one employee received direction from a doctor to self quarantine, but the Veterans Home refused to follow the doctor's directive.

He accused the governor of needlessly exposing staff and Veterans to COVID-19 because her administration failed to prepare for the pandemic.

The governor's office has issued a letter from the Veterans Home, saying it's taking action to keep staff and residents safe.
