Quick Testing COVID-19 Machines Coming to Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa is close to getting five-to-15 minute COVID-19/coronavirus tests.

On Thursday Governor Kim Reynolds said a number of testing machines from Abbott Laboratories are on the way and they're expected to arrive next Tuesday.

Reynolds says the machines won't immediately speed up testing capacity. She also says each machine has the potential to test about 100 people.

According to the State Hygienic Lab, it has the ability to test more than 2,000 people under its existing testing method, which requires about 24-hours to produce a result. Reynolds says the state is using both rapid tests and traditional tests in its plan to battle COVID-19.

Iowa now has 1,270 cases of COVID-19/coronavirus, with 25 deaths. Roughly half the deaths have involved residents at long tern care centers.
