The organizers of the RAGBRAI bike ride in Iowa have cancelled this year's event.
The group says RAGBRAI, known as the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, will not take place in 2020, but will return in 2021.
Organizers said the decision was difficult to make, but called for based on the extreme disruption caused by the COVID-19/coronavirus outbreak.
The group said it wouldn't be responsible to move forward and put the safety of riders, crew, communities, or residents at risk, noting the ride takes many months to plan.
It said the RAGBRAI XLVIII route put in place for this year's ride will remain the same for 2021, as towns along the route have spent substantial time and resources in planning for the event.
Organizers say the full route with meeting and pass-through towns will be announced at a later date
