Documents Show Hit-and-Run Murder Suspect on Meth, Acted Intentionally

DES MOINES, Iowa - Court documents say a man accused of killing a Des Moines college instructor and her dog after running them over this month was on meth and acted intentionally.

49-year-old Jason Sassman is charged with 1st Degree Murder in the death of 38-year-old Lauren Rice who was walking her dog 1700 block of Beaver Avenue April 5th.

Newly released search warrant documents show Sassman intentionally ran Rice over because he believed she was a criminal with a gun about to kill someone at Price Chopper.

Rice was unarmed at the time of her death.

Police say Sassman tried to flee the scene, but was quickly caught. The truck he was driving was damaged after taking out a utility pole while he was driving off the roadway at the time.
