Strong thunderstorms, tornadoes possible in Iowa on Tuesday

JOHNSTON, Iowa -- Severe thunderstorms that could spawn tornadoes are being forecast for parts of Central, Eastern, and Southeast Iowa on Tuesday.

"We're looking at a low pressure system that's going to be moving across. That's going to bring this initial wave of severe storms" says National Weather Service meteorologist Brooke Hagenhoff.

She says the biggest threat is going to be along and east of Interstate 35.

"Portions of Central and East Central Iowa will have that severe weather threat with large hail and damaging winds" Hagenhoff says.

She says the best chance for tornadoes will be in Southeast Iowa.

Hagenhoff says the state could see the severe weather from noon Tuesday through early evening.

She says the storms will give way to strong winds Tuesday night and through the day Wednesday.
