1,100 Worker Layoffs to Begin at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino

ALTOONA, Iowa - Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino is laying off over 1,100 employees as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The layoffs are scheduled to begin on May 3rd, although Prairie Meadows says it'll extend benefits to employees until the end of May.

73 employees will be kept on board to oversee operations of the facility during the shutdown.

A proclamation issued by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds Monday keeps casinos and gaming facilities closed until May 15th. Prairie Meadows has been closed since March 16th.

Prairie Meadows CEO and President Gary Palmer said in a statement, "We want to continue assisting our employees as they navigate these difficult and challenging times."
