State Historical Society documenting COVID-19's effect on Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The State Historical Society is starting to put together artifacts marking the COVID-19 cornavirus' place in Iowa's history.

"Usually, people don't realize they are living through a turning point when it happens. Usually, it takes a little hindsight to realize when there were pivotal moments in history" says State Historical Society spokesperson Michael Morain.

He says says right now they're taking on-line submissions.

"Photos, video recordings, maybe an on-line diary, or on-line journal or a blog, e-mails--those kinds of things we are collecting now" he says.

Morain says they're taking suggestions for physical artifact submissions, and will be able to actually take those items when Historical Society facilities re-open to the public.

"If people have a mask, or hand sanitizer...somebody suggested a canceled stimulus check. Those kinds of things we may be able to collect later" he says.

Morain says more information on possible submissions is on the Society's website.
