Iowa corn, soybean planting nearly done

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa farmers are moving closer to getting the 2020's corn and soybean crops in the ground.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture's weekly Crop Progress Report says farmers have planted 91 percent of the corn crop--almost a month ahead of last year and two weeks ahead of the five-year average.

The department says the state's soybean crop is 71 percent planted, also a month ahead of last year and more than two weeks ahead of the average.

One-third of the expected corn crop has emerged, and there is some concern about how those plants will be effected by last weekend's frost and below freezing temperatures across much of the state.

The state says farmers had nearly five days suitable for field work last week.
