DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is asking for public caution over the Memorial Day weekend, even with a lot of rain in the forecast for Iowa.

The department is especially focused on boating activities as the summer season starts up, noting there are more than 195,000 registered boats in the state.

It has guidelines for boaters during the pandemic, which include limiting the number of people onboard to 10 or fewer, and practicing social distancing at docks, boat ramps and marinas.

Iowa has 5,000 lakes and 54,000 miles of rivers and streams.

The DNR says its officers made 67 Boating While Intoxicated arrests in 2019, while there were 7 boating-related fatalities and 13 incidents involving injuries.
