WEST DES MOINES, Iowa - Friday night saw non violent protesters gather in West Des Moines' Valley Junction.
About 1,000 people assembled at a rally to hear speakers on Breonna Taylor, a black woman from Louisville who was killed by police while in her home earlier this year. Friday would have been her birthday.
The West Des Moines event featured spoken word and poetry from Movement 515, which also scheduled a 9 p.m. rally with candle lights at Pappajohn Sculpture Park to honor Taylor.
Friday marked the the eighth day of protests, marches and rallies in Des Moines following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody on May 25. It was also at least the third consecutive night in which there was no violence or use of force by police.
Some businesses that had boarded up their windows earlier in the week in Valley Junction brought the boards down by Friday evening. The West Des Moines rally ended shortly after 10 p.m.
The Des Moines Black Lives Matter group was involved both the Friday night events.
