260 New Cases of COVID-19 in Iowa, 16 Additional Deaths

DES MOINES, Iowa - The state is reporting 260 new cases of COVID-19, along with 16 additional deaths as of 10 a.m. Tuesday.

A total of 622 people in Iowa have died from the virus and 22,179 have tested positive out of 192,950 tests overall.

The state reports 4,776 people were tested Monday. A high mark of nearly 7,000 people were tested last Thursday. Governor Kim Reynolds has set a goal of 5,000 tests per day between the TestIowa program and the state hygienic lab. One in 16 Iowans have been tested for the virus.

Buena Vista County continues to show the biggest concentration of COVID-19 cases based on population, and that number continues to rapidly grow.

Buena Vista County now has 6,174 cases per 100,000 residents. By comparison, Crawford County has the second highest concentration per 100,000 - 3,375. Polk, the largest population county in the state, has 998 cases per 100,000.

The state has conducted 23,297 Serology tests to find anti-bodies in people who have contracted and recovered for COVID-19. There have been 1,973 positive Serology tests, accounting for 8 percent of those tests.

There have been 13,244 recoveries from the virus for a recovery rate of 60 percent.

The state is reporting COVID-19 outbreaks at 39 long term care centers, a drop from 40 Monday as Cottage Grove Place in Cedar Rapids, which now has no coronavirus cases, has been taken off the list. Deaths of patients from those centers total 309, accounting for 50 percent of the state's deaths.

Overall, COVID-19 case counts have flattened since May 6th, and are slowly tapering off.

The numbers for the state only represent COVID-19 figures compiled by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Unreported cases and deaths could make the actual figures different.
