DES MOINES, Iowa - Des Moines Black Lives Matter is looking forward to another meeting with Governor Kim Reynolds Monday.
Several members of the group met with Reynolds Friday, where they say she told them she would draft language for a executive order to restore voting rights for felons released from prison.
They said she did not commit an executive order, but would meet with them again Monday, and would see if lawmakers support the order.
Black Lives Matter wants an executive order that would restore felon voting rights without a requirement for them to any pay restitution. In a Twitter statement, they said they want an order identical to one signed by Governor Tom Vilsack in 2005. That one was later rescinded by Governor Terry Branstad.
Reynolds has stated she wants a constitutional amendment to restore felon voting rights to ensure it remains permanent.
A measure in the state legislature would establish a constitutional amendment, but would have to clear several other hurdles and wouldn't become law until 2022. It also includes language requiring felons to pay restitution before having their voting rights restored.
Currently, Iowa is the only state where all convicted felons lose their voting rights unless they apply to the governor.
