Des Moines International Airport passenger numbers show slight rebound

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Passenger numbers at Des Moines International Airport in May are a little better than they were the month before.

"We were down 88 percent--which is not great--but we did see some more passengers coming through the terminal" says spokesperson Kayla Kovana.

She says COVID-19 affected travel numbers in April were down 95 percent from the year before.

Kovarna says they are seeing signs that people may be a little more willing to travel right now than they were just a couple of months ago...

"In June, we are serving 17 non-stop destinations, where as our July schedule is back up to 21 non-stop destinations" she says.

Kovarna says it may take the airline industry three to five years to get back to 2019 numbers.

"Certainly we hope to bounce back sooner than that. Right now our recovery, in the very early stages, is nearing those national trends" she says.
