Gov. Reynolds to sign executive order restoring felon voting rights

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds says she'll sign an executive order restoring voting rights to people with felony convictions.

Iowa is the last state in the country than bans felons from voting. As it stands now, felons have to petition the governor to restore their voting rights.

The order would allow about 60,000 Iowans to vote. Nearly one in ten of them are African-Americans.

Reynolds said she hoped the legislature would pass it as a constitutional amendment that would then be decided by Iowa voters. Senate Republicans have killed the measure the past two years..
