Two men charged in Darquan Jones assault

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A pair of Des Moines men are facing charges in what may have been racially motivated attack.

Des Moines Police say Dale Lee Millard, 28, and Jesse James Downs, 27, are charged with felony counts of willful injury causing serious injury.

Police reports say Millard "made admissions" to the attack on DarQuan Jones, 22, who is Black.

Jones suffered broken bones in his face and a broken wrist after he was attacked on the way to his girlfriend's on South Union St. in the early morning hours of May 16th.

Jones and other witnesses says his attackers used racial slurs during the beating.

Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek says hate crime charges were considered against Millard and Downs, but the limited nature of Iowa’s hate crime statutes did not apply in this case.
