Iowa's Ongoing Jobless Claims Up Slightly, Still Far Down From High in May

DES MOINES, Iowa - New numbers from the U.S. Labor Department show a mixed bag for Iowa'a unemployment picture.

First time jobless claims were down last week in the state, by 527 to 8,542 from 9,069 in the previous week.

But ongoing claims, which reflects the unemployment rate, were up slightly after they'd been dropping for five straight weeks.

Ongoing claims totaled 153,771, up 1,032 from 152,739 in the previous week.

By comparison, ongoing claims peaked in the first week of May at 191,257.

Unemployment insurance benefit payments totaled $38,079,525.38 last week, up from $37,966,993.80 the week before.

The following industries had the most claims:

  • Manufacturing (1,961)
  • Industry Not Available - Self-employed, Independent Contractors, etc. (1,372)
  • Health Care & Social Assistance (727)
  • Accommodation & Food Services (532)
  • Retail Trade (528)
