Ankeny Man Charged in Pitbull Attack at Party

ANKENY, Iowa – An Ankeny man faces charges after police say he intentionally riled up a pit-bull at a party, and then stabbed it to death when it turned on him.

Ankeny Police officers were called to 517 NE Delaware Avenue, June 6th shortly before 12:30 a.m. Police say when they arrived, they saw a large amount of blood in a hallway and on a sidewalk near the building.

Investigators believe 33-year-old Juan Moreno Martinez tried to get the dog to attack another person before it attacked and injured a woman who attempted to intervene.

The dog, a Cane Corso pitbull, then attacked Moreno Martinez, injuring him as well.

Police say the woman suffered a significant injury to her arm and the dog’s jaws had to be pried from her arm.

Moreno Martinez he suffered a number of bites to his leg and arm before he killed the dog by stabbing it in the head and neck several times.

Martinez was arrested June 25th, and is in the Polk County Jail, charged with:

Assault causing serious injury

Assault while displaying a dangerous weapon (2 counts)

Animal neglect causing serious injury or death

Trespassing

He's also being held on two probation violations in the Polk County Jail.
