CLARINDA, Iowa -- A member of Iowa's Congressional delegation is sponsoring a bill that renames the post office in Clarinda, Iowa.
Representative Cindy Axne (D, IA-3) wants the branch named for Jessie Field Shambaugh--known by many as the "Mother of 4-H."
"In 1901, she formed the after-school clubs that would serve as the inspiration for 4-H. She pioneered the virtues of head, hands, heart and health" Axne says.
She says Shambaugh began teaching in Page County in 1901, and formed the Boys Corn Club and the Girls Home Club to teach students essential skills for the farm and home through extracurricular programs.
"Her work for Page County as an educator, mother, author and radio contributor earned her an induction to the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in 1977" Axne says
She says the post office renaming bill is co-sponsored by the other three members of the Iowa House delegation--Representatives Abby Finkenauer (D, IA-1), Dave Loebsack (D, IA-2), and Steve King (R, IA-4).
