Coralville City Councilor Resigns After Remarks About Black Lives Matter

CORALVILLE, Iowa - A Coralville City Council member is not commenting on his resignation after controversial remarks

City Councilor Tom Gill has been criticized for calling Black Lives Matters activists "a bunch of criminals" during a council meeting last week.

He has not responded to requests for public comment after serving on the city council for nearly 30 years.

Several fellow council members were critical of Gill's comments, with one calling them "racists." Several of his nieces and nephews sent a letter to the Iowa City Press Citizen, saying they "fiercely disavow" his comments.

Coralville Mayor John Lundell said the city is looking at options to select a new council member.

In a statement, Lundell said, “I am grateful for Tom Gill’s contributions during the past 29 years, a time of significant growth and development in Coralville. I wish him the very best.”
