Gov. Reynolds says Schools not Following State's Plan are Violating Law

JOHNSTON, Iowa - Governor Kim Reynolds says that schools that don't follow the state's requirement for 50% in-person instruction for the upcoming school year are violating state law.

Speaking at a news conference Tuesday morning, the governor said that school districts choosing to defy the state's requirements are, "not defying me, they are defying the law." She added that instructional time will not count for districts that do not meet the 50% in-person requirement.

A few Iowa school districts, including Des Moines, Urbandale, and Waukee, have voted to ignore plans outlined by the state and will instead hold classes exclusively online.

Reynolds plans to meet with leaders in the Des Moines and Urbandale districts on Tuesday to try to reach a compromise on their plans to begin the 2020-2021 school year.
