JOHNSTON, Iowa - The Johnston School Board is promising more details Tuesday after voting Monday night to start the school year with a combination of online and in-person classes.
The 5-2 vote came during a long and emotion filled meeting that included the reading of messages from parents.
Families in Johnston can now opt for the district's hybrid plan of a 50/50 combination of on-site and online learning or choose 100 percent remote learning.
Dozens of signs were held outside Monday night's meeting in protest of a proposal to conduct all classes in-person.
The state is calling for half of all classes to be conducted in person, unless there's a high rate of positive COVID-19 tests in a school's county.
Face masks will be required inside Johnston schools for in-person classes.
