Waukee District Still in Conflict With State on School Plan

WAUKEE, Iowa - The Waukee School District continues to differ with the state over guidelines for conducting classes.

Governor Kim Reynolds said Tuesday that schools which don't hold 50% of classes in-person are defying the law. The Waukee District says it's not in conflict with the law, but contends proper interpretation of the law allows for local control of in-person versus online instructions.

The district thinks the state is forcing schools to conduct in-person classes when COVID-19 positivity rates are far to high. The Waukee School Board will vote Monday on its own standards for classroom activity.

Waukee Schools Superintendent Dr. Brad Buck served as Director of the Iowa Department of Education under both Governor Reynolds and Governor Terry Branstad beforehand.

Waukee schools are scheduled to start instructions on August 25th. Families must decide between between online or in-person learning under the district's Hybrid Learning plan.

The district's holding a town hall for staff member on Zoom Wednesday at 1 pm.
