Des Moines City Council Approves Ammunition Purchase in Heated Session

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Des Moines City Council has unanimously approved a $99,000 police purchase of ammunition.

The council reconvened its meeting yesterday, after shutting down Monday's meeting abruptly during heated public comment against the purchase.

The Des Moines Register reports there were coordinated attempts to derail yesterday's meeting by trolls who shouted racist slurs.

The city council passed the ammunition purchase with no additional public comment yesterday, after two dozen people spoke out on the issue Monday.

A city spokesman said Monday's comments counted toward the 30 minute limit on discussion.

The ammunition will be used for officer training and use in critical situations such as active shooters, bombings and civil disobedience.

It will be used by the Metro Special Tactics and Response (S.T.A.R.), specialized unit within the Homeland Security Bureau that responds to a wide variety of critical incidents.
