Fort Dodge Woman Killed By Officers Identified

FORT DODGE, Iowa - A Fort Dodge woman shot and killed by deputies while armed with knives last week has been identified.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says 39-year-old Melissa Halda was fatally shot by a Webster County Sheriff’s deputy during an altercation on Tuesday night. Halda was reported to be acting erratically while wielding large knives at the time of the shooting.

Halda was shot and killed after deputies from the Webster County Sheriff’s Office and a Fort Dodge police officer responded. No other details were released about the shooting.

Webster County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Brett Knippel has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting continues to be investigated.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office.
