City of Des Moines to collect debris from residents for free

US-WEATHER-HURRICANE

DES MOINES, Iowa -- People in Des Moines will have an opportunity to get rid of their storm debris for free starting next week.

Des Moines Public Works says residents can put branches curbside to be picked up starting Monday, August 17th at 6:00 am.

There are a few notable rules:

  • Branches need to be placed in the area between the sidewalk and street, parallel to the street
  • Branches can't exceed eight feet in length or 18 inches in diameter
    • Branches too long or wide will be left behind
  • Don't put branches next to anything that could be damaged by equipment

They expect the process to take a few weeks. Crews will pass every home just one time.

The city recommends hiring a private business to remove any trees that are down in your yard.
