DES MOINES, Iowa -- Two people are in police custody after stealing a car and breaking into a Des Moines home Saturday.

Police say they tried to stop a stolen car just east of Drake University before the driver of the car refused to pull over, starting a chase.

39-year-old Mitchell Cartwright was driving with 38-year-old Heather Karl in the car as well. Police pursued the two out to Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines before ending the chase.

Through traffic cameras, Police found that the two later abandoned the car just west of Waveland Golf Course. Shortly after this Police got a call from a woman saying two people were breaking into a home.

Police reported to the home just north of where Cartwright and Karl had abandoned the car and tried to talk with the two, who were inside with a teen boy.

Police eventually had to call in a Metro STAR tactical unit, which took the two into custody and secured the safety of the teen boy.

Cartwright is being charged with second degree burglary, second degree theft, felony eluding and interference with official acts. Karl is being charged with second degree burglary and interference with official acts.
