DMPS sports, activities suspended when virtual learning begins next week

Des Moines Public Schools says when classes begin virtually next week, all in-person activities and athletics will be put on hold.

The Department of Education warned schools last month that those that do not hold in-person classes can't participate in athletic competitions.

Today's announcement does not affect competitions scheduled before the first day of classes on September 8th, including Friday night's football games.

DMPS has not been granted a waiver to start the year with online learning. The district is taking legal action against the state, challenging their attempt to override the local control and decision-making authority provided to districts under Iowa law.
